MAIN GALLERY
Scott Teplins new works
on paper examines a fantastical intersection between word play and
private bodily function. Focusing on our physical and intellectual
shortcomings, Teplin exposes the humorous discomfort associated
with sexual, intellectual, and abstinent failure. Painted on paper
in an array of pastel watercolors, Teplin seduces the viewer with
his playful palette of baby pink, yellow, and blue. Teplin creates
a tension between his exquisitely drawn images and his shameful
subjects.
In Teplins drawing Moron Tissue, the artist forms
an image of a science experiment that aims at demonstrating the
nature of stupidity. A long tube winds through a bubble gum like
substance, out through billowy teats, and into a barrel of mysterious
liquid. The words Moron and Tissue hang
above Teplins experiment like signage for a favorite chocolate
bar or soft drink.
Scott Teplins work has been selected for solo-exhibitions
at Jessica Murray Projects, Brooklyn; DiverseWorks, Houston; Howard
House Gallery, Seattle; and Adam Baumgold Gallery, New York. He
has been included in exhibitions at: PS1 Contemporary Art Center,
Brooklyn Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of Art, Artists Space, Drawing
Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music and Nicole Klagsbrun; Bucheon
Gallery (San Francisco); and Free Gallery (Glasgow). Teplin's work
has been acquired by many institutions including: Museum of Modern
Art, Walker Art Center, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Altoids Collection,
Smithsonian Institution, Yale University, Harvard University, and
the New York Public Library. His work has been reviewed by the New
York Times and Creative Review Magazine (London).
DRAWING ROOM
Jeff Schers short films
Spin Cycle and Still Loaf with Guitar continue
his long fascination with the illusion of motion via animation.
Exploiting the iconographic nature of white bread, the artist creates
a panorama of color and optical effects.
Comprising 78 paintings on paper, Spin Cycle features
a single slice of Wonder Bread rotating in limbo. As the film progresses,
Scher adds layers of paint and collage to the individual frames
and then re-photographs them. The result is a film that blooms with
successive additions of color and texture until the image evolves
into a dense and rigorous cinematic event.
Jeff Schers work is included in the permanent collections
of the Museum of Modern Art, Academy Film Archives, Hirshhorn Museum,
Pompidou Centre, Musee dArt Moderne, Vienna Kunsthalle and
the Austrian National Film Archive. His films have been included
in film festivals around the world including New York Film Festival.
His films have been featured at the Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn
Academy of Music, PS 1, The Guggenheim Museum, The San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art. He has received grants from the National Endowment
for the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, Creative Capital, and the American
Film Institute.
