MAIN GALLERY

For "Like the Motion of Water," David Ellis presents an installation of painting, sculpture, video and sound. Created from recycled materials--metal signs, feed sacks, light box advertisements, sound equipment and tobacco leaves, Ellis' work investigates the intersection between urban and rural vocabularies. For example, in a sculptural DJ station, Ellis houses stereo speakers in dried gourds, reactivates 1930s gramophone horns, and spins a limited edition of slip mats. In "Catfish," the artist takes an abandoned collection of car wash signs as his canvas, then revives their association with water by embellishing them with a ten-foot squirming fish. In another installation, the artist salvages light-boxes--with images and sounds of waterfalls—found in Chinatown. Exploring our consumption of nature and culture, the artist adds his own imagery to these examples of mass-produced serenity. With each artwork, Ellis mixes the languages of the city and country creating an explosive, organic, melee.

Ellis grew up in Cameron, a small tobacco farming community in North Carolina. He moved to New York in 1989 to study art at the School of Visual Arts and then at Cooper Union. His public art projects can be seen on industrial buildings in Brooklyn, tobacco barns in Cameron, North Carolina, and on the exteriors of Mo Jo Trucking vehicles. He is also the founder of an artists collaborative team called The Barnstormers. Ellis has been featured in ID, Paper Magazine, ArtForum and Flash Art.

DRAWING ROOM

Jessica Murray Projects is also pleased to announce photographs by Amanda Alic. Her project "Off Season" captures abandoned play areas—racetracks, miniature golf courses and resorts without the usual presence of participants and spectators. All are immediately strange in temperature. For example, her skeletal roller coaster is encircled by a series of orange, red and black fences, and leafless branches. In another image, a hundred white chaise lounge chairs surround an artificial pond complete with an inactive miniature waterfall. Referencing the romanticizing of ruins, these images convey exquisite yet eerie locations imbued with memories of pleasure and activity.

UPCOMING IN JANUARY

Bonnie Collura launches her first installation of "The Prince Project", a new series of sculpture, drawing, video and performance based on the story of the creation of Golem. The exhibition titled "Dust" will comprise ten drawings, a sculptural projection of the prince and a poppy-making machine.
